Fate and her brothers give her no choice, however, except to flee—into a storm, and into the arms of a stranger. Without friend or fortune, in a moment of recklessness, Serena seduces the handsome lord. But just one night together will start a sequence of events that threatens to destroy them both.

"I have been reading the "Company of Rogues" series and skipped this one at first due to the negative reviews. Francis and his new wife, Serena, were mentioned in the fifth book as having some concerns by the other Rogue members and It made me curious to read their story. I'm really glad I did. One other reviewer mention Serena "raped" Francis so they had to get married. I didn't read it that way--he was asleep and she aroused him and he complete the task. Is that rape? It was not violent or forced, he could have stopped when he realized it wasn't a dream. Anyway, I didn't see it as that bad. It did lead to her getting pregnant (she had been told by a doctor she was barren) and that is why they got married.
Serena had been treated horribly in her first marriage after her father sold her for $30,000 guineas? pounds? I don't know British currency that well to know the difference. Anyway, he was a real letch and made her do things no respectable person did. She handled the abuse by spacing out and just enduring the abuse. After he died she returned to her family home where her brother proceeded to gamble away everything her husband had left her. She was now penniless and they were trying to sell her to any man who wanted to marry her and the starting price was $10,000 (because she wasn't a virgin this time.) They were bullies and threatened to hurt her if she didn't cooperate. Her only choice was to run away with little money she could find around the house.
Frances was on his way to a small town to confront a man who was "bothering" his mother, and stumbled upon Serena walking on a rarely used road because her brother had almost caught her at the last posting station. She had no idea where she was or what she would do next. Being a gentleman he couldn't leave a lady alone on a road so he offered her a ride. A wicked storm hit and they spent the night together at a farmer's house. Serena had decided her best chance as a penniless woman was to become a mistress and hoped Frances would be impressed with her willingness and take care of her. That's how the sexual encounter came about. He wasn't impressed--he felt his honor had been attacked. Serena's late husband had only used her and never cared about how she felt and since he had insisted on her pleasing him she thought the whole world was like that.
He took her to Aunt Arabella's house--so glad to see her again. He knew Arabella would watch over her and she'd be safe. Serena loved living with her until she noticed her monthlies weren't happening. Frances, being the honorable man he was, married her immediately. But how was she supposed to enter the high society life he lived, the sister of two brutes who no one in society would accept, and the wife of a man famous for his parties in his home that were pretty much orgies. She was terrified of meeting anyone who had attended her husband's parties.
Here come the Rogues to the rescue! It is such fun to see how they all come together to help each other. There are lots of problems for Serena and
Frances to overcome but they manage to do it, and straighten out the problem with the man who Frances's mother is in love with. What a great story."

Here come the Rogues to the rescue! It is such fun to see how they all come together to help each other. There are lots of problems for Serena and
Frances to overcome but they manage to do it, and straighten out the problem with the man who Frances's mother is in love with. What a great story. - I read this book many years ago, and when I learned that it was available as an e-book, I decided to get a copy to add to my collection.
Even though I ha previously read Forbidden, I read the reviews, a habit of mine. I tend to concentrate on the more negative reviews because "great book, loved it" doesn't tell me much, but with the nitpickers, I can check to see if any of my bugaboos are mentioned.
The review that stuck out for me mentioned disgust at a pivoted scene in which the heroine essentially rapes the hero. I still got the e-book but wondered what my reaction would be because I don't care for rape as a dramatic device, regardless of who the victim is.
I was not particularly disturbed by that passage because I accepted the heroine's desperation and motivation. However, I did find the final scene disturbing. As great as it was to have the loving couple content at last, I could not applaud the idea of them enjoying the use of jewelry (specifically a dog collar and handcuffs) which had been used to debase the heroine by her first husband.
There were a few other minor nits which bothered me. The secondary love story of the hero's mother was more aggravating than sweet or amusing. And the heroine's artistic ability seemed to be pulled out of a hat.
I still think Jo Beverly is an entertaining writer but but this not the strongest of her works. - well written. enjoyed H/h, though I felt the trauma of her first husband was too easily overcome,if it could be overcome at all. Also too easily overcome was the difficulty of social acceptance. Her experiences would make it difficult for her to be accepted today, let alone during regency times. I did however, find myself laughing at times and liking the main characters.
- Heroine widow of a sexual pervert who since age 15 was his sex slave comes together with the hero virgin gentleman She is the sexual aggressor he is not drunk half asleep but very willing That isn't rape see ' prisoner of MY desire ' by Lindsey that's female on male rape but a great story anyway this story was good could have been great if not for too much input from characters from other books not horribly dark since pervert husband was jealous kept her only to himself I won't read books where heroine is forced by multiple men too depressing
- I have read most of the rogue series and not necessarily in the sequential order. Most of the books have been spot on and engaging. But here is the exception. I found the premise contrived! The book caught my interest in the beginning but lost me half way thru the story. The lead female character Serena was strong enough to survive a previous humiliating and tortuous marriage yet becomes a whining victim when she meets the man of her dreams. Why? I felt that the writer had a terrible editor who failed to edit the book properly. The story becomes too long and monotonous. Also the love scenes were ridiculous!
- An engrossing, romantic read! Loved the adventure, the romance was believable and to sigh for, and the authenticity of the setting and events was spot-on. Jo Beverley really is an amazing writer. I love how she weaves in history without making it the entire focus, and the characters are true to their time.
- Here we have Serena Riverton, age 23, widow, an exotic beauty, ill used, poor and scared. Then she meets Lord Francis, age 25, one of the known Rogues. She is running away & picked up by him. Well written.
- I love this series. The story was well written and the story well defined. The author as always draws the reader in and keeps our attention until the end. The story had intrigue, suspense, betrayal, violence, discoveries, love, and happily ever afters.
