An inside look at what our schools are like today and practical advice for navigating the educational system.
School is our children’s second home. They will spend more time there than anywhere else in their formative years. We all need to talk honestly about the nature of this environment, how it works, and how it doesn’t work. Our kids are depending on us to create a school system where they can learn as well as feel happy. The more we know about how school works, the better we will be able to navigate our way through "the system" and help our children do the same. What Every Parent Should Know About School is an honest, positive, thought-provoking look at what schools are today and what they could be in the future.

"An excellent book. The author finds significant faults within the school system, and is clearly sympathetic with the students. In identifying and exploring multiple negative impacts on students, he refrains from laying blame on any specific group, though it is clear that the responsibility for improving the schools is broad.
I am far removed from my school years, nevertheless remember very clearly my disdain for school - there was simply nothing there to like. The content, e.g., left much to be desired - music classes where music was never played or heard; history that somehow managed not to notice such events as WWI and WWII, fascism, communism, or even capitalism for that matter - in fact, almost anything that might conceivably have been of any relevance to a young person moving towards adulthood was absent (ok, slightly overstated, but only slightly...).
There is one important point the author doesn't note - for all its failures, the school system is in fact a fabulous success in its prime function. Unfortunately, this function is not education and it's certainly not the well-being of the students. The prime function of the 'modern' school system is daycare. This is the single reason why all parents so strongly support the school system, even if their personal experience of school was poor. It is perhaps in part because our schools do such a good job of providing daycare that other roles we might reasonably expect the school to perform are neglected.
I would have hoped that schools had improved significantly since my time, but judging from the author's stories, that may not be as much the case as it should be. It's long past time for a hard look at what our schools are and what they should be. This book is an important contribution towards enabling that process."

It's long past time for a hard look at what our schools are and what they should be. This book is an important contribution towards enabling that process. - What Every Parent Should Know About School is filled with relevant, current insights that are useful for anybody who is trying to help their kids through their formative years. The author also has many good suggestions about how to speak to children and tackles the topic of bullying in a direct and meaningful manner. As for the discussion related to the school system itself, there is no shortage of unique and thought-provoking ideas about the industry. As a former student of his, I can attest to the fact that he practices what he preaches.
- Excellent book! This book should be required reading for EVERYONE, teachers, administrators, school staff and bus drivers, not just parents!!
