"This book is about once-upon-a-time in America." — Eric Sloane. Writer and artist Eric Sloane had an abiding love for America and worked throughout a long and productive life to capture the American spirit in word and picture.
The America Sloane loved was rooted in the simple virtues of our native soil love of freedom, respect for the individual, sensible frugality, and determined self-reliance — all of which went to make up what Sloane perceived as our true American heritage.
Nowhere is this heritage more amply portrayed than in the work and ways of the early Americans in our pioneer days. In this book you will listen to Sloane's talk of home and hearth, farm and field, and see all manner of tooks, utensils, buildings and rural scenes rendered in his finely detailed and lively drawings.
A visit to America of "once-upon-a-time" brings us home to a land whose pioneer spirit endures, even amid the rapid and radical changes of our times

- Eric Sloane's books are always terrific. You learn a lot about early American life. His drawings complement the text beautifully. I wish all his books were still in print. He was a great writer and artist. You rarely find that combination anywhere. You will never be disappointed if you get one of his books. I'm so glad he took the time to document America's past and its traditions so well.
- Purchased several books by Eric Sloane as gifts for family members. They are well written and the illustrations significantly add to the overall enjoyment. The old timers love to recall the memories and the younger generation enjoy reading about the past. Once you open and start, you donĂ¢€™t want to put the books down. Simply done and truly enjoyed. Thank you.
- This is a great little quick read if you are at all interested in early American life. This book walks you through the day to day life of early American settlers. You will understand their struggles, and learn about the tools they used to create a life. I thoroughly enjoyed this read.
- Eric Sloane has carefully and thoughtfully preserved an important American History. Being an Educator, I believe that every teacher should encorporate Eric's book into their American History lessons.
- I love this book. I used to get the hard cover version from our library and savor times gone by. I purchased Once Upon a Time, obviously, to have my own copy and keep it by me. However, though this is supposed to be unabridged, there are at least two items missing - passages about the ice house and passages about the uninterrupted sky.
There is an illustration of an ice house, so I think I have the right book - perhaps, just a slight chance I am thinking of one of Sloane's other volumes - but, I miss his descriptions of the cool darkness, descriptions which inspired me to write a poem about a girl who grew up in Maine and recalled the ice house. I also missed the description of our once uninterrupted sky, now laced with white trails from jets. What will be next? Sloane asked. Still, bottom line - Sloane's books are absolutely worth buying! Our ancestors were amazing!Once Upon a Time The Way America Was - Eric Sloane once again at his best, in my humble opinion. I love his books--his illustrations are so life-like and are so beautifully supportive of his text! I truly enjoyed this publication.
- Good book
- This is a wonderfully written book on the way people lived long ago. What is different from those times of manual powered tools and oil lamps than those of today? Find out how difficult our ancestors lives were. How things were made in the old days and how they differ from todays factory made items . a wonderful trip back in time to when America was young and hard work was fun!
